FINAL PRESS RELEASE

Grand Bahama Island, March 17,2006

 

The 27th Annual Bacardi Rum Billfish tournament at Port Lucaya Marina on Grand Bahama Island produced a record number of 68 boats in a field of entries that read like a “Who’s Who” of Sport Fishing. Over 450 anglers and crews witnessed Kaye Pearson and his Ft. Lauderdale based “Showpiece” become the first ever repeat winner of this event. Kaye won his first Bacardi tournament in 2002.

 

“Showpiece” boated two Blue Marlin that gave the team a total of 797 points to win the tournament. However, honors for the Heaviest Blue Marlin went to Jim Goldasich fishing on his 52’ Hatteras, “Goldrush” with a 525 pound Blue Marlin caught on the second day of the competition. Jim hails from Boca Raton, Florida.

 

Third place honors went to “Spike’s Boat” owned by Donald Spricher of  Leola, Pennsylvania. “Spike’s Boat” released two white marlin and two sailfish and accumulated 200 points with the releases. They also won the Tournament High Point Release Boat for the most release points and the Billfish Foundation awards for the most releases.

 

Three Blue Marlin were boated in the competition, while 7 other Blue Marlin were released, 11 white marlin releases and 7 sail fish releases.

 

Josh Denton on the “Reel Easy” won the heavily contested Wahoo game fish category with a 69.5 pound Wahoo. Randy Fields and the crew of “Wolverine” caught the heaviest tuna (49 pounds) and Robert Penza on “Oil Slick” weighed the heaviest Dolphin, 41 pounds.

 

The dates for the 28th Annual Bacardi Rum Billfish tournament will be March 11 to 16, 2007.
