"Double Eagle", a 50' Viking based in Ft. Pierce, Florida, won the 1st Leg of The Bahamas Wahoo Championship held at Port Lucaya Marina, Freeport, Grand Bahama Island.

Twenty-one boats participated in the competition and 57 eligible fish were weighed-in for a total of 2,010.6 points. The three-day tournament was tightly contested. Five boats, Double Eagle, Double Down, Hokey Pokey, Reel Easy and Florida Yacht, weighed-in five eligible fish but in the end "Double Eagle" edged ahead in the standings 291.5 points. Second place went to Double Down, 198.5 points. Third place "Hokey Pokey" was right on their heels with 195.0 points. Helping "Double Eagle" edge out the other boats for first place was the fact they weighed-in three of the heaviest wahoo of the competition, a 67 pounder on the first day and two 68 pounders on the last day. Actually, the Double Eagle called the two 68 pounders twins!

"Double Eagle" is owned and captained by Duane Gossett from Apopka, Florida. The boat is based in Ft. Pierce. Fishing with Duane is his son, Wade Gossett and his crew of several years. They were proud to point out to everyone they are not fishing professionals. All of them have full-time day jobs in diverse fields. During the evenings, Duane even spent time on other boats sharing his Wahoo catching secrets.

"Double Eagle" is leading the Bahamas Wahoo Championship. "Double Down" is in second, leading Hokey Pokey by 3.5 points. The boats will now take a Holiday break. They will gather once again at Port Lucaya Marina for the Final leg of the Bahamas Wahoo Championship on February 5th to 9th, 2002.
